As you’ll recall in It’s Coming I mentioned the possibility of room temperature quantum computers. Then I find out that they are nearly here.
Room Temperature Qubits is an article at the Cio.com website which talks about an advance regarding what amounts to burnt mothballs. If it works out — I hope — I expect we’ll soon see pocket-sized computers you can carry in your pocket, and which will offer you guidance and advice you’ll need for the world of the future.
As you ponder that keep in mind that most everything will have a quantum computer installed in it. At the moment self-driving vehicles have limitations. Replace the binary computer with a quantum one and watch as things take off. Sleepless incorruptible surveillance. Honest up to date online information. In-depth unbiased analysis. Science done right. There’s tons more in the way of possibilities.
Author Verner Vinge has spoken about a coming technological singularity, an event where — as I understand it — our machines will become super intelligent and as a result able to advance our knowledge and technology to an amazing extent.
At the moment we are talking about an artificial intelligence. But that requires human intervention. What I see is the appearance of natural intelligence, something that does not require any sort of intervention by any party. Where our machines become naturally intelligent and use that intelligence to further advance their descendants.
Changes are coming and I expect the Singularity — as some have named it — to mean changes in our descendants. At the very least we will see a severe genetic bottleneck and extreme changes in physiology and psychology. What we consider important, what we consider vital will change and what happens to our progeny may well be considered a speciation event. Homo technologis may be on the way.
