With Wearable Computing Ring Jason Maderer introduces us to a technology in the form of a ring which lets us transfer information from one medium to another. In this case from your fingers to a computer. This could be adapted.
Say to a finger where you could write long hand and have the symbols you draw out be reproduced on a screen. Maybe even the touch sensitive screen on your computer or tablet, but not just those screens already design to be written on but any touch sensitive screen.
In Sorry, Grumpy Cat the author David Salisbury points out that dogs actually are smarter than cats, though both are rather dumber than humans. Of course both are smart enough to get along with us, for we can be a tolerant and understanding beast.
One thing to note is that according to the article the North American raccoon is a remarkable intelligent animal for the brain size it has. Sorry, Europeans, but your raccoon settlers will be a part of your environment for a long time to come.
Another thing to note here is that in the environments we supply to the life around us the fact that an animal is better able to accept the presence of humans means that that animal has a better chance of survival, and so a better chance at reproduction. And that the smarter an animal is the easier it is for him to accept human presence, and even interaction with humans. Though sometimes, as with cats and tasmanian devils, how the animal associates with his mother makes a difference, for it would appear that both species see us as mother figures.
Let’s start with these observations. First is the fact that the Earth spins. Add to that the speed at which the Earth orbits the Sun, the Sun orbits the Galaxy, and the Galaxy moves through the Universe. Now as I understand it, that adds up to a few million miles an hour. You get right down to it, we’re zipping right along.
Now consider the fact that the faster you go the closer to the speed of light you get, which means the greater the dilation. As I understand it, with our velocity there may well be locations in the Universe where things are actually older than us, and that the actual age of the Universe maybe 10, a 100, or even a 1,000 times older. In effect what we see as a 13+ billion year old structure may actually be a 13+ trillion year old one.
Now our speed through the Universe I’ll call our absolute velocity. At the moment we would appear to have a relatively decent positive absolute velocity. But what if we had a way to slow down? What if we could decrease our positive absolute velocity, or pav? As our pav slowed would the passage of time outside us slow down, so that one year in personal time became one year in real time?
What if we could stop our pav? That is, no movement in the absolute sense, not the relative sense we know today.
And what if we could achieve a negative absolute velocity, or nav? That is, instead of just changing our direction of movement, but go in the reverse of our current velocity. I’d expect time to run backwards, and the weaving of events over the forward course of time would unravel. That is to say, that things would be undone, which would likely include us.
I know, I’ll bet some of you are going, “Ack!”, but I get ideas like this a lot. It’s part of being smart and autistic. So what do you think?

Since earlier versions of this are no longer available I’ve decided to rewrite this. This is a sort of introduction to the Mythus role playing guide―RPG―and the world of Ærth.
Mythus is a sort of fantasy RPG, though not as something like Dungeons & Dragons or Runequest is. Mythus is instead a sort of gaslight fantasy, at least where my work appears to be taking it. The technology is largely medieval or renaissance, though in some respects the world of Mythus does appear to be advancing into the modern era, and in some respects the early industrial.
Why the rewrite?
I was inspired by a book, Three Princes by Ramona Wheeler. The book is an alternate history in which Julius Caesar stayed in Egypt and managed to consolidate his power there. The story itself concerns the three princes of the title in a world with intrigue, skullduggery, and an appearance by Otto von Bismarck―who appears for a good reason.
Ms. Wheeler also mentions a substance she calls Haeka, which she later informed me is an alternate spelling of the Egyptian heka.
Oh, and Three Princes also has air ships―dirigibles in this case I think―which would appear to make it a proper alternate history. All in all I’ve found it to be a good read, with interesting characters and good world building.
Now that you know something of why I’m reiterating earlier work we can go on to the world of Ærth and the Mythus RPG.
The First Thing
And that starts with the fact that Mythus is a fantasy RPG, and that means that it has magick. Though not necessarily magick as many of us think of it.
In our world there are those who say that magick uses an energy unknown to science. It comes down to a desire to get magick accepted as a science, because science has done a lot for us and has a certain panache. In the eyes of some science is romantic. As far as I can see the magick in Mythus has much of the flavor of science to it, for all that it really can’t be a science in our world. Yet in Mythus it is treated as scientific and it is as a science that it is understood.
But keep in mind that how magick is treated is how I understand the people of Ærth understand it, and that may not be entirely accurate. For in all honesty science is not a matter of discovering absolute facts, but more a matter of making intelligent guesses we then verify as best we can using what we know and what seems reasonable to us. And it behooves us to remember that on Ærth sages and scholars really haven’t been looking long or very hard at how magick works, having devised explanations that make sense to them. On Ærth the scientific method is still rather new and could use some further development.
That should suffice for this draft. Coming up I’ll be taking a look at the world and magick of Ærth and how it is like our magick, but yet is not.
I’ve been wondering about how animals got between Asia and North America when conditions are right, and it occurred to me to find out what I could online. What I learned came as something of a surprise.
First, that Beringia was never what you would call icebound. Not to point that it was impassable to life. The Chersky Mountains in the west and the Alaska and Brooks Mountains to the east may have been snow capped, but the low lands were pretty much ice free and comprised a tundra animals could cross easily.
Knowing this I have to wonder if humans were really restricted to the south and the southern coast. Given that we are an inquisitive and inventive beast, was there anything really that stopped these early migrants from hunting, exploring, and settling as far north as the Arctic Ocean. As far as I can see they could and did.
And not just them but other animals as well. Bigfoot for example. But what did they eat?
Well, in the early sixties the then young Farley Mowat was sent to the Canadian Arctic to a study on the local wolves of the study area. In his book Never Cry Wolf, and the movie made from it, he recounted just how he answered the question of just what those wolves ate when the caribou were not available to eat. His answer was the local mouse, which abounded in such abundance as to keep Mowat himself well nourished. So plentiful were they that there was no reasonable way either the wolves or he could ever but a dent on their numbers.
And where did the mice find their food? Evidently from the local grass, grain, leaves, and roots.
Now extend this to Beringia, a steppe of hundreds of thousands of square miles. An ocean of grass. God only knows how many mice—the billions maybe, and animals such as wolves, humans, and bigfoot to feed off them. Other than the cold the place was a damn paradise. Last I heard the proto-indians may have spent as many as 10 thousand years dwelling there until the way became clear to migrate into the lands south an east of Beringia.
And where and how did that happen? Where and how did the ice covering the Canadian Rockies and the Canadian Plains melt? Did it have to be a coastal route, or is that just an assumption caused by our profound ignorance of the local conditions?
We hate not knowing so we speculate, often with inadequate information. And in time our speculations take on the patina of established fact, at least until we get evidence that we are wrong. But it can take time for us to realize and accept that we are wrong.
But my point here is, according to what I have learned it was possible for at least one large bipedal ape to cross into North America from Asia, and very possibly two. In short, the North American Sasquatch could live here and be discovered by us. You get right down to it, there was nothing stopping it.
Next I’m going to take a look at the Indonesian Hobbit and how they might have made it to Flores Island.
It occurred to me that while a name such as Albion would fit were the Romans to have any real part in the history, in a world such as Ærth where they never conquered the place it really wouldn’t.
So I decided to use an older name. In this case Brytha, from with with get Brython which applies to someone or something of Brytha. Brython in term is where we get Britain from.
Brytha is the kingdom which takes the place of England in our world. In general terms it covers pretty much the same territory as England. Brytha also includes the principality of Kernow—our Cornwall, which is located in the south-west of the kingdom.
Brytha is Kelltic by culture, which the people thereof adopted from the Gallic Kelts sometime in the 4th century>—Before Atlantl’s Fall. It is thought that Kelltic Culture was adopted because the Kelltic language of the time gave the natives a way to communicate, something their various languages did not really allow them to do. As part of adopting the language other aspect of Kelltic culture came along, thus the proto-Brytha became a Kelltic people.
Before becoming Kellts the Brython may have been known as the Prydain after the land of Prydai, a name given to what is now Brytha before it became a Kelltic realm. Prydai is now the name given to that part of Brytha along the Irish Sea north of Cymru. Inhabitants of Prydai are usually known as the Prydain, and there are locations there were the language is sometimes a pre-Kelltic one.
The first settlers of what later became Brytha are known to have come from what is now Iberia, specifically the north-west corner. These proto-Euskara—our Basque—apparently arrived in dugouts carved from local Iberian trees which for the most part carried individual families arranged in clan groups, or which arrived alone. It is most likely that those families which arrived alone subsequently formed new clans, while those who arrived as clans would later organize into what we now know as tribes.
These proto-Prydain would later spread inland and along the coast, taking up life as hunter-gatherers until the arrival of the farmers from the East.
The Farmers Come
These were a people from Ærth’s Near East who had develop agriculture sometime in the 11th millennium>—our 10th millennium BC. Having greater population than the proto-Prydain, and able to support a greater population, these invaders were able to wrest land from the aborigines for the most part. Though as the first peoples came to adopt agriculture that advantage soon passed away.
The First Elves
Though there were those who kept resisting the farmers and refusing to take up agriculture. Faced with eventual extinction they apparently discovered portals to the world of Phæree which they wound up migrating to. There the goddess known as Phæree changed them into the beings we now call elves, the better to fit them into her world.
Later certain Elven clans returned to Ærth and Prydain where they became known as the Alf. Other elves ended up in what is now France, Germania, and the Skandic Countries—where last they became known as the alfar.
The Kellts Arrive
As I mentioned before the Kelltic Culture first arose in what is now Western France along what is now the Brythic Channel—our English Channel. These early Kellts had a distinctive mode of dress, their own style of weapons and accessories, and a particular style and focus of worship. Through trade they came to establish settlements along the Prydain coast, and through to settlements their culture spread. This is also when the term Brytha first came to be used among them, apparently referring to their settlements which came to be known as the Brython lands and themselves as the Brythic people. Where Brytha and its derivatives came from his not known, but there are some who think it may come from the Prydain for “stranger”.
These first Brythic Kellts found it a bit harder than the original farmers to take control of the land, but marriage and cultural assimilation they really had no trouble becoming the dominate culture. Though it did have an impact on their language, which soon picked up a number of Prydain words and usages. This giving us Brytho-Kelltic.
And there you have my first post on the Kingdom of Brytha on the island of Brytha west of mainland Ærope. Next up comes the post on early Kelltic Brytha and their first contact with the Romans.
Purchase: I can’t make you pay for this should you decide to download for your use, but please keep in mind that the creation and writing of such material does take time and effort. So you can think of this as a Pay What You Want, which comes down to what you think it’s worth. Later I may add a way for you to download as a PDF, and yet later this and subsequent posts in this series will be combined into a single document on the subject of Brytha.
Use: How you use it is your business and you are welcome to make changes as you see fit for your own RPG. Change everything, use it just as a source of inspiration. Correct the mistakes you think I’ve made or, make new mistakes of your own. Be creative and don’t let me stop you.

The first is autism, which comes is a variety of forms. In my case I get overwhelmed by events and find that I can’t really handle everything that’s going on. In short, I get scared. So I back away, looking for a place to hide. That leads to my isolating myself and that in turn leads to my being estranged from others. That makes it hard for people to get to know you and understand.
The other is apnea, which also comes in variety of forms. Most of you have heard of sleep apnea, where usually there’s an obscruction in the throat which screws with inhalation. But there is also central apnea, where essentially you forget to breathe. Having incompletely developed brains premature infants have this. It can also be caused by a stroke or injury. In my case it would appear that that part of my brain just didn’t grow up.
In my case I stop involuntarily breathing for up to 20 seconds. Voluntary breathing is no problem, but I have to remember to breathe. That tends to interfere with sleeping, and you need sleep in order to repair the wear and tear life puts on you while your awake.
The end result of all this is that I really don’t have the energy. To get that energy I at least need a cpap, and may need something more hard core. Though I may need supplemental oxygen.
And if you happen do know me, through STAR San Diego or another group, this helps explain why I haven’t been all that friendly. It comes down to; you scare me and I haven’t had the energy.
Where the apnea is concerned getting on a ventilator and maybe supplemental oxygen will help. But first I need to get a sleep study done to find out what kind of ventilator would work best, and if I need supplemental oxygen.
Where the autism is concerned, therapy with people who know what they’re doing would help, and acceptance and understanding from the people who know me.
And to those I say, just because I’m not dashing about being the life of the party doesn’t not mean I’m not having fun. Sometimes its a sign I don’t know what to do, other times it just means I really don’t have the energy. In the long run I am enjoying myself, but my enjoyment is quiet.
Come January things should be changing. The important change is that I should have more energy to do things. Which means being able to care for myself better and to actually get productive. And with the energy getting out and learning how to handle myself better in public. Which means being friendlier with the people I know. Being a better neighbor in short.
Which means I should be able to handle waiting for a better apartment, but that waiting still means I could use some help. You have some to spare drop it in the tip jar, and think of it as an investment on what I do. And I will get back to Mythus and my other projects.
My your post meal snooze today be refreshing, and may your loved ones let you know should you snore—a sign of obstructive apnea you know.
For me it’s the end of the month and I’m nearly broke. I have just enough for a single gallon of milk—nonfat, and what with my teeth getting pulled later today it means that until my dentures are ready my diet is going to be restricted. So donations for food would be a great help. Please?
Back when I was a kid I learned that the easiest way to conquer a people was to divide and conquer. With all the upset about how men are taking advantage of women it occurs to me that our superiors have been using that technique on us.
Look at how our society keeps us isolated from each other, at how estrangment between different parties is encouraged. We keep getting hit with stories of stranger danger, and the perils posed by the other. We are kept moving around, discouraged from making connections, and encouraged to treat those different from us as unworthy of our attentions.
The result you can see in the news and on the web. Even play gets us all upset, and we are encouraged to isolate ourselves from our fellows while sticking to a narrow group of those we think we can trust.
You get right down to it, we’re being told continually that we are incompetents and need protection. Our “betters” need to keep us under control, for they are afraid of what could happen should they lose that control. They need to feel important and needed, and most importantly that they matter more than the people under them. That is a crock of shit you get right down to it.
There are people you need to keep an eye on, folks you need to watch and ward. But the bulk of the population? Get real. Our problem is that we refuse to prepare folks for life on their own, holding to the idiot belief that they need to be controlled, and that we can control them. Yes, a good many people do need guidance, but not all the time for crying out loud, and that guidance does not include dictation and tyranny. You want our society to get better, to recover from this urge to despotism, you need to start trusting folks. And that means letting them learn to trust you.
That in turns means getting to know them, and letting them learn to know you. Don’t hide but let the people around you get to know you, and you get to know them. It won’t kill you. It may embarrass you at times, but only you can make that fatal.
And do it face to face, communicating at a distance sucks dry rocks. Let them see you, hear you, smell you. Make your connections immediate, for that is how we communicate best. Most importantly, let yourself be open to the other, for it is by your trusting them that they can best learn to trust you.
Being autistic I tend to have trouble opening up to others, but I can. Given the opportunity and the encouragement I can learn to let down my guard. But it takes patience and understanding. Most importantly sympathy and acceptance.
So for you what you really need is to have knowledge and understanding of what the other guy is going through and how he handles matters; how he can handle matters. Be sympathetic for that odd neighbor up the street could well be an interesting chap to know. Above all be brave, for you have nothing to lose but your isolation.
The first message I get from this audio is a very simple, “How dare you challenge your students?” Next comes, “How dare you ask to face your accusers?”
Then you have this claim that by asking to know who her accusers are she is threatening them. She wants to know who they are and that means others are going to know their identity, and that means that somebody may go out and do physical harm to them. I have to ask,so what?
Where are their friends, where is their family? Where are the people ready and willing to take their side? Who among their “ardent defenders” is going to stand in front of their door and whoop ass on the fools who wish them harm? These are friends?
But the biggest message I got from this is the infantile belief that the common man has to be shielded from reality. Got news for you, it’s dangerous out there. Your job is not to protect people from it, but to prepare them for it. So 10 year olds aren’t ready. Last I heard 20 year olds are a lot more ready, and insulating them from the outside world is fucking abusive. It’s time our “protectors” started treating the adults like adults.
We’ve never had absolute safety and we never will, so give up this idea you have to make everything absolutely safe. And I say it’s time we gave the control freaks a good boot in the fundament and drove them screaming back to their deeply hidden caves.
Life is dangerous. Life has always been dangerous. If you’re not ready for that then you can lock yourself away in something deep and dark, and get yourself sterilized so your birth defect can’t spread to new generations.
You will not do anything that harms society, or by inaction allows society to come to harm.
You will not do anything that harms a human being, or by inaction allows a human being to come to harm.
The first takes priority over the second. And by inaction I’m including the refusal to get people ready for the world. By doing that you are by inaction allowing the to come to harm. And by that you are making it possible for society as a whole to come to harm. That is a violation of the first law.
Learning to walk involves a lot of falling down and getting scratches and scrapes. It hurts. But in the end you wind up walking and running and better able to handle things. So let your young people fall down. Let them get scratches and scraps. Then let them get off their butts and carry on, it aint gonna kill them. Stand up for yourself and don’t let the fools control your life.
