I’m currently reading The History of Tammany Hall by Gustavus Myers—you can download a copy by using a link at the link. Now I haven’t read the whle book yet—I’m fact I’ve really just started, but the lesson I have learned is, Trump is nothing new.
It’s said that history repeats itself. Not so, history reiterates. We keep making the same mistakes because we want to. We really do want to see a different result for the most part because we really can’t understand just how and why the result we got had to happen.
There will always be people who disagree with us. Always be people who want things their way. Liberals insist that they have to be right, giving no consideration to human nature. Libertarians are the same way. Both, plus conservatives and others simply won’t admit that we are not a rational species, never were and never will be. We are emotional and until we accept that fact we really won’t see any progress.
Pride has always played a role in our affairs. The pride in insisting that others must see things our way. It played a role in Tom Jefferson’s election to the Presidency, it played as big a role in Don Trump’s. A pride that makes us see our position as the right one, and which won’t let us see the other side as having any validity. It was pride that led to the election of Abraham Lincoln, as much as to the election of Jimmy Carter.
Myers’ history is a history of greed, duplicity, and pride. It is a history of corruption financial, political, and moral, and a history of irrationality. It is instructive as to the depths we will go to in search of power and position; and mostly importantly, wealth. You want to understand current affairs give The Hisory of Tammany Hall a read.
